Israel Kamakawiwo'Ole (Hawaiian Music Legend)

Israel "Iz" Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole (May 20, 1959 – June 26, 1997) (pronounced [kaˌmakaˌʋiwoˈʔole]) was a Hawaiʻian musician.

He became famous outside Hawaiʻi when his album Facing Future was released in 1993 with his medley of "Over the Rainbow" and "What a Wonderful World", which was subsequently featured in several films, television programs, and commercials.

Through his consummate ukulele playing and incorporation of other genres (such as jazz and reggae), Iz remains one of the major influences in Hawaiʻian music over the last 15 years.

Throughout the latter part of his life, Iz suffered from severe obesity and at one point carried 769 pounds (349 kg) on his 6 feet 2 inches (1.9 m) frame. He endured several hospitalizations and died of weight-related respiratory illness on June 26, 1997, at 12:18 a.m. at the age of 38. He is survived by his wife Marlene Kamakawiwo'ole and his daughter Ceslieanne "Wehi".

The Hawaiʻi State Flag flew at half-mast on July 10, 1997, the day of Iz's funeral. His koa wood coffin lay in state at the Capitol building in Honolulu. He was the third person in Hawaiian history to be accorded this honor (the other two were Governor John A. Burns and Senator Spark Matsunaga) and the only non-politician. Over 10,000 people attended his funeral. Thousands of fans gathered and cheered as his ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean at Mākua Beach on July 12, 1997.

Ka ʻAnoʻi is the debut album from the late Hawaiʻian musician Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. This was released only by an independent label so some call into question the quality of audio recording compared with his other releases which were released on a label with more money to invest in production. Still, this release offers what is arguably his most popular song release with the combination "Over the Rainbow and What A Wonderful World".

When this album was released, he became famous with his medley of "Over the Rainbow" and "What a Wonderful World". Kamakawiwo'ole's rendition of "Over the Rainbow" features fragments of different verses strung together in a new order. It remains a favorite of many listeners, and has become a cultural phenomenon, as attested by its frequent use in entertainment and advertising. It has been featured in the films Finding Forrester, Meet Joe Black, 50 First Dates, Fred Claus and Marilyn Hotchkiss' Ballroom Dancing and Charm School, as well as an episode of television's ER, Cold Case, Jon & Kate Plus 8, Primeval and the final episode of the BBC program Life On Mars. The ukulele intro to this song was also heard in TV commercials for the ill-fated Internet toy vendor eToys in the early 2000s, but without any of the vocals. A version of "Over the Rainbow" based on Kamakawiwo'ole's was performed by The Blanks on the Scrubs episode, "My Way Home".

In 2009 the tracks opening is used as the theme for the BBC documentary series on the South Pacific Islands

N Dis Life is the final album of original music by Native Hawaiian singer Israel "Iz" Kamakawiwo'ole before his death. Released in 1996, it is his most critically acclaimed album, although it is only his third most popular. It shows a slight change to Iz's musical style, being more dark and more of an alternative music-styled album (although it is not rock). There are several strangely upbeat songs with sad lyrics, such as tracks 4, 5, and 8, but the majority of them are melancholy.

* Top Independent Albums (47 weeks on the chart between 2001 and 2003, peaking at #6)
* Top World Albums chart, peaking at number 1 (104 weeks on the chart between 2001 and 2003, peaking at #1)
* The Billboard 200 (5 weeks on the chart between 2001 and 2002 peaking at #135)
* Top Internet Albums (3 weeks on the chart in 2002)

The album has continued to be a top seller, charting in the top 5 of the year-end Top World Catalog Albums chart for the years 2006 (#2), 2007 (#3), and 2008 (#5).

Jason Castro covered Iz's version of Over the Rainbow on American Idol in 2008. It was by far his best performance in my opinion and brought the house down.
